How to judge the quality of forged steel balls

Jul 08, 2025

The quality of forged steel balls can be judged from the following aspects

1. Appearance inspection
First, look at the surface of the steel ball. The surface of a high-quality forged steel ball should be relatively smooth, without obvious cracks, sand holes, pores and other defects. Because these defects will become stress concentration points during the use of the steel ball, causing the steel ball to be damaged prematurely.
2. Hardness test
Hardness is a key factor in measuring the quality of forged steel balls. Appropriate hardness can ensure that the steel ball can effectively crush the material without excessive wear during grinding or impact. The steel ball can be tested with a hardness tester.
3. Toughness assessment
Steel balls with good toughness can withstand greater impact forces without breaking. This can be judged by a drop test. Let the steel ball fall freely from a certain height (such as 6- or 10 meters). If the steel ball does not break, it means that its toughness is good.
4. Chemical composition analysis
The chemical composition of high-quality forged steel balls meets the standard requirements. For example, the content of major elements such as carbon (C), manganese (Mn), and silicon (Si) in steel balls needs to be controlled within a reasonable range.

Too high carbon content will make the steel ball too hard and brittle, while elements such as manganese and silicon can improve the strength and toughness of the steel ball. Professional chemical analysis instruments can accurately detect the chemical composition of steel balls to ensure their quality.
